Getting married is one of the greatest experiences of your life, you have committed to the person you love and are now looking forward to the rest of your life together. The next step will almost certainly be to create a home which reflects both your styles; this can be a difficult process and one that you will never fully agree on! The following tips will help you to create the perfect space for both of you:
Know yourself
Before you can start decorating or even discussing it you must know what style you prefer. Are you a tidy person or a messy one? Are you morning people, evening people or one of each? Are you likely to be sat in bed reading while your partner is sleeping or working? The first step must be to understand what designs each of you like, the best way of doing this is to rip pictures out of magazines and collect a pile of designs that you like. If you both do this then you will be able to swap piles and understand each other better; you do not need to judge their style!
Interior designer
If the funds are available then it may be advisable to hire an interior designer. They will be able to focus your attention on the key parts of the room, usually the carpet and seating arrangement. If you both love this the rest can be built around it.
Colors
Research has shown that men do not generally like the color ‘pink’. However, they are happy with any color similar to this, particularly if it does not have the word pink in its title; subtle raspberry is an excellent example. Of course if one side of your partnership chooses the color for one room then the other should be able to do the same for a different room.
Furniture is an essential ingredient for any home! However, you should not rush to pick your favorite set of furniture for a room. It is perfectly acceptable to purchase items at different times and in different styles; this will create a more unique style which reflects your personalities. It is essential to purchase your furniture in a neutral color; this is a color which will go well with any color scheme. Furniture tends to be expensive and you do not want to be replacing it just because you feel like repainting the walls.
Accessories
These are the most essential part of any design; the small things which emphasize your personality and style. Every house will have its share of ornaments, some will have been picked up on joint holidays, birthdays and some will be family treasures handed down. Whichever space you are accessorizing you should make sure there are pictures of the two of you and something that reminds you of a fun time. These articles should also be personal, to reflect your own personalities.
Walls
These are some of the easiest items to decorate; a coat of paint is usually enough. When you are first setting up home together it can often be a good idea to keep the walls a neutral color and allow the accessories, such as cushions, made to measure roman blinds, rugs and curtains to brighten the room with their splash of color. These can also be easily changed to suit your changing tastes.
The property you are sharing is your home and you do not need to conform to predetermined standards when decorating it. Consider the space you have and make the most of it. This may mean making the second bedroom an office or keeping a kitchen open to allow space for a family table. The best way to express your personality in any space is to organize it according to your needs.
